Tongue in cheek is an expression that may have originated from sticking one’s tongue into their cheek to suppress the urge to laugh. Pretty Boy is a satirical tune I crafted for a man I dated many years ago. Yes, he was pretty.. but ladies–he called himself a pretty boy! How could I resist writing a song that claimed ugly men made the best lovers?
Pretty Boy Words and music by Crow Johnson Evans (ASCAP)
When I was just a young girl
Some withered old woman told me
I’ve had a lot of sweet men hold me
The pretty boys are gonna turn your head
You better get you an ugly man instead.
An ugly man is dead set on pleasin’
The pretty boys just don’t have the reason
An ugly man don’t want to lose
The pretty boys just sit back and choose.
Do…
There you sit like some kinda dream
Why’d you have to be the best lookin’ man
I’ve ever seen
You got your ladies all standin’ in line
Momma’s gonna tell you, boy
Just one time.
If you see me with a handsome man
Chances are my heart is still in your hand
But if he’s as ugly as sin,
Boy, you better get back on your toes again…
Do…
Chase your beauty queens while I’m gone
I’ll just laugh and sing this song
But one thing could put my knickers in a twist
To hear you’re loving a woman with a face like a fist
Oh, don’t you do it. Don’t love no ugly women while I’m gone’
If you see me with a handsome man
Chances are my heart is still in your hand
But if he’s as ugly as sin,
Boy, you better get back on your toes again..
A funny story about this song…after I married Arthur, my friends wanted to meet my ugly husband. Can you imagine? One of the neat gifts we got at our wedding was a jar marked “Ashes of Old Lovers”….

I love this concept, and it relays wisdom. Thank you!

Marlon, My father was a great guy and totally blind most of his life. It amazed me that he was a great judge of character without visual clues. Thanks for listening!!!

Dearest Crow,
I love your song!
BIGLY.
And I’m going on record to say you’re correct!
Angie
You are great! First time I heard about the ugly husband or the jar… love you both

I’m laughing… the older we get the funnier the song is to me. Ha. Thanks for commenting…

I believe I knew that Pretty Boy. If it’s who I think, he is charming the angels now.
He told me once he stood on his mountain and sniffed the air and said, “I know she’s out there!”
And that was you!
If wrong Pretty Boy, I apologize. ?
Crow Johnson Evans
There can only be one original Pretty Boy. Laughing here. Thanks for your comment, Jude
