Listen Here for Crow talking about this post. Let us know what you think of the Audio…
I love it when Folk radio DJs come up with a theme for one of their programs. “Lessons Learned” was one this last week. I don’t think the lyrics to “Ashes and Smoke” pass the PG13 test, not for the language but for the content. Any song that begins with “If one look could do it you’d a given me a child. . .” will offend some and earn an amen sister from others.
The lesson learned is “Fate loves a little joke…” I had fun writing this song.
For some background, I was a divorced woman living on the road playing music and trying to understand the world, love, and longing . Ha. Piece of cake, right?
A saucy irony comes through in “Momma raised a good girl.. told me don’t ya be no fool… ouuu, Momma, he’s the exception to the rule”.
Enjoy listening to this lesson learned and pass it along if it strikes a note with you.
Ashes and Smoke- by Crow Johnson. (ASCAP)
If one look could do it, I swear you’d a given me a child. Good God man you are driving me wild. Momma raised a good girl. Told me don’t ya be no fool. Ouuu, Momma, he’s the exception to the rule.
Just when you think you’re above it all, you’re gonna fall.
Make a little money. No more hand-to-mouth. Look out now. A Norther will get ya from the South. Ridin’ high, ridin’ low… ouu, Momma, you gotta love them both you know cause
Just when you think you’re above it all, you’re gonna fall.
Fate loves a little joke, she’ll cut you down in just one stroke. Fate loves a little joke, she’ll cut you down in just one stroke… Ashes and smoke.
Walk the walk, try to hold your stand. Talk the talk, make your promise land. Girls love what they hear and boys love what they see.. I’m just a woman, have a little pity on me.
Fate loves a little joke, she’ll cut you down in just one stroke. Fate loves a little joke, she’ll cut you down in just one stroke… Fate loves a little joke, … ashes and smoke.
Thank you to Eric T. Schabacker and Winterwood Studios, Darren Novotny on percussion and inspiration. I’m singing and playing hollow-bodied electric Gibson 3/4 tuned way down. Enjoy…
Do you have a lesson learned to share?

Fate can be like that when it’s not being wonderful. Thanks for listening to the spoken audio part, too.

My god, woman… you have talent and gift to burn!
I love every single manifestation of it – and it’s bern my privilege to watch its many manifestations over the years.
But good lord, your music – the writing, instrumentation, melody, phrasing, YOUR voice
has always
knocked
me
out

A fine compliment from one who understands “Saucy”… thank you, Dragon. It is a joy to watch each other’s creative adventures… and they keep on coming.
