About That Song: I Wish This Were a Love Song

About THAT song ..., Auntie Crow's Corner, Life on the Road as an Artist / by Crow Johnson Evans

Spread the love
Art by Crow Johnson Evans

Valentine’s Day is next month. If you are wishing for true love… make space in your world for him/her/them. Dream the spirit, the energy, the goals, the fascinations of this person. Carve out the place this person can fill. Then be very lucky with your timing. The timing must be right. Arthur and I were “militantly single” when we met. I was devastatingly divorced and he’d watched his friends suffer failed first marriages. We became friends for six years before the timing was right for love. We married the year we turned 40.

Some people remain thirsty for the longing for something they don’t have. My song, “I Wish This Were a Love Song,” was recorded in 1983 the year before I married my true love. And all these years later I am genuinely happy. So if you are longing for something you might be easy on yourself. If it’s the thing that’s driving you rather than the love of longing, you can be satisfied in your skin once the improbable wish is granted.

Here are the lyrics. It was recorded and arranged in Dallas at Sundance Studios by Rush Beesley and the album is called “Picture the Thought.”

I Wish This Were a Love Song  – words and music by Crow Johnson Evans

I could get a real job, move back to town, and see you every day.

If I keep going on like this, I’ll dream my life away.

Stayed up all night talking in the park and listen to me now.

You’d think that we were lovers. I make no sense somehow.

I wish this were a love song

I wish that it were true

I’d wake you up tomorrow morning

And sing it just for you.

I wish there’d been a way

To see what we could do

‘Cause if it were a love song

I’d be singing it for you.

We could raise a kid or hit the road, or just be best of friends

I can’t believe I just said that. Where does this dreaming end?

If all the miles from here to there are just a thought away,

I must be really crazy. I’m there with you today.

I wish this were a love song

I wish that it were true

I’d wake you up tomorrow morning

And sing it just for you.

I wish there’d been a way

To see what we could do

‘Cause if it were a love song

I’d be singing it for you.

I wish this were a love song

I wish that it were true

I’d wake you up tomorrow morning

And sing it just for you.

I wish there’d been a way

To see what we could do

‘Cause if it were a love song

I’d be singing it for you.

Such a romantic tune. It reminds me that I don’t sing to Arthur often enough these days. Make a space in your life for the things or someone you’d like to have close by. And good luck from a very lucky Crow
